The laboratory materials developed will be used in ARC 121-122, Introduction to Architectural Drafting I-II. The materials will provide the students with the correct procedures in using the software for multi-level structure design. The manual will guide students in generating the geometry of a solid model and will include the procedures to develop floor plans, elevations, and sections.

ABSTRACT: I will develop a six-hour video cassette of instructional lessons for a distance education course English 242, American Literature II, from Twain until the present. I have done video lessons for three other distance education courses, all of which have substantially improved retention in the three courses and enhanced the students learning experiences. Since the current English 241 professor has just finished videos for that course, it is imperative, since English 242 is a follow-up course to English 241, to have a like delivery mode.

ABSTRACT: Our college last evaluated the effectiveness and accuracy of our placement procedures for writing courses in 1987-88. Since then, our student population has changed, course descriptions have been modified, and instructors have noticed a decrease in the accuracy of our placement measures. We would like to investigate available placement instruments for writing courses, pilot several in the spring, and select one for college-wide adoption next fall.

ABSTRACT: Stipend support is sought for studies of sediment cores from Lake Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan. With student assistance (separately funded), I hope to clarify the Late Quaternary history of lake-level change (and by extension, pre-"Industrial Era" climatic oscillations) affecting Central Asia using appropriate sedimentary analyses. These data will inform global paleoclimate reconstructions.

ABSTRACT: There is a need for the instruction in basic technology provided by conceptual physics courses such as PHY 130. Currently, PHY130 is offered in support of a technical programs, but PHY 130 would also be of interest to students looking for a science elective and to the workforce in the local industries, as was pointed out to me by my colleges industry contacts. For a number of reasons (time, commute, shift work ), the traditional classroom is not always appropriate, and distance learning where both time and space constraints are eased could provide a solution.

ABSTRACT: Obtaining a degree and/or a job should not be the only objectives of a college student. Preparing the student for the workplace should also be a priority. Currently, the Virginia Department of Corrections (DOC) is experiencing a 41% turnover of Corrections Officers during the first year of employment. This is not only expensive but can be frustrating to the student/employee. Costs of training, salary, and equipment are placed on the Virginia taxpayers. The students/employees are dislocated from the workforce with an education and training for a job they were not fully prepared to meet. This project will explore, with the assistance of the DOC, which factors may be indicators of success as a Corrections Officer; success defined as twelve (12) months or more employment with the DOC.

ABSTRACT: Aggressive driving is a growing problem on the roads of our communities. Stress, frustration, and anger often produce hostility and threaten the lives of hundreds of thousands of Virginians. The proposed 40-minute video workshop and educational manual will help students better understand, interpret, and eliminate psychological causes of aggressive driving. The workshop will be based on a series of specially designed interviews with leading specialists on anger and rage, law enforcement professionals, and drivers themselves. The manual will contain a comprehensive step-by-step program of anger management. Based on the original screenplay (scenario), all the interviews will be professionally videotaped and edited.
