Call to Order and Welcome:
In the absence of the chair,
Deborah Hart-Bowley, Jennifer Allman welcomed everyone to the annual convention
and to the commission meeting. She
introduced Kay Robinson, acting liaison for the executive committee. Kay explained that the commission liaison,
Nancy Lewis, from ESCC, was not able to attend the convention, so she would be
acting liaison from the executive committee.
Kay explained that the role
of the new Student Services/Student Government chair would be different from
past years. In past years the chair was
responsible for the Student Showcase component. This year the Student Showcase was not a part of the annual
convention. The Student Showcase will
be presented at the annual Student Leadership Conference, Hyatt Fair Lakes, in
Fairfax, Virginia, October 13-15, 2000.
Kay explained the new duties
of the chair would be to concentrate on professional development for the
commission members. The chair would
also be responsible for collecting ideas for concurrent sessions for the annual
convention and passing those ideas on to the Executive Committee.
(SPECIAL NOTE: Since
the meeting at the VCCA in October, it was announced that this commission would
continue to be responsible for the Student Showcase.)
Kay then opened the floor for
nominations for a chair and a secretary.
Margaret Dutton from TCC was nominated and elected chair, and Marion
Jackson from PVCC was nominated and elected secretary for the Student
Services/Student Government Commission for 2000-2001.
Discussion was then turned
over to the members present to generate ideas for topics for the concurrent
sessions at the next convention. One
idea generated was for someone to speak or to have a panel on regulations for
students with disabilities. Another
suggestion was to have a session on handling difficult people, or good customer
service. Margaret will pursue different
ideas and present them at the VCCA Professional and Personal Development
Conference in March.
Respectfully Submitted,
Marion G. Jackson, Secretary
Student Services/Student
Government Commission
